| The following funds support 18 programs in 30 sites across the state for Adult Education Basic and Secondary Education:
- Federal Adult Education Act (WIA Title II)
Under this Act, each state must develop a plan to provide adult education services to typically underserved groups and involve the public and private organizations that serve educationally disadvantaged adults. This state grant is based upon a U.S. Department of Education formula where 95% of funds are allocated to local programs. The WIA Title II requires a match of 25% plus maintenance of effort from each state each year.*
- State Appropriation for Adult Basic and Secondary Education
Each biennium, the state legislative assembly appropriates funding for Adult Basic and Secondary Education to be used in conjunction with the federal grant. This appropriation provides the 25% match and maintenance of effort required. The 2009 legislation allocated $1,850,000 for local programs; 100% of this appropriation supports those local programs.
- Local Support
The WIA Title II Act requires state to work with other regional, state and local agencies/organizations. The state supports programs in communities where there is interest for establishing an adult education program. The local sponsoring agencies provide in-kind and cash support towards the programs wherever it is needed |
