Getting Started with a Good Breakfast
The School Breakfast Program provides a nutritious meal
each school morning to children who might otherwise go with out.
School Breakfast helps students learn and participate in daily education
activities.

- 55% of the school sites in North Dakota serve both
lunch and breakfast
- Over 13,500 students eat breakfast at school each
day
- North Dakota provides breakfast to about 30% of
the low-income students
- The number of schools offering a breakfast program
increased by 8% from 1998
- The School Breakfast Program offers many benefits
to the students and the school:
- Better overall performance in class
- Children are more alert
- Fewer complaints of stomachaches and headaches and
fewer trips to the nurse
- Less absenteeism and tardiness
- Nutritious breakfast
- Link between school breakfast participation and
higher test scores in reading and math
- Improved daily nutrient intakes of Calcium, Iron,
and Vitamins A and C
- The School Breakfast Program can be easily implemented.
The program may be started at the beginning of the school year
or any other time during the year. The following items are
completed before the program is started:
- Determine student and community interest
- Obtain approval to start program from local school
board and state agency
- Establish meal times, prices, staffing, menus, etc...
- Promote School Breakfast Program to students, parents,
and school staff

- Join forces with other parents to show a strong
interest in having a School Breakfast Program available at your
