Dr. Wayne G. Sanstead brings an extensive background of
legislative, executive and educational leadership to the North Dakota Department
of Public Instruction as state superintendent.
He has served North Dakota
in elective offices for forty-five years; eight years as state representative,
two years as state senator, and eight
years as lieutenant governor. Presently in his twenty-sixth year as
state superintendent, he is the nation's senior state chief school officer.
An extremely popular public
official, Dr. Sanstead received more votes in his 1988 re-election than
any other candidate for any office in the
history of North Dakota.
Dr. Sanstead received his bachelor of arts degree
in speech and political science from St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN.
His master's degree in public
address and group communications is from Northwestern University, and
his doctorate is in secondary education from the University of North Dakota.
During
his academic career, Dr. Sanstead was named a James J. Hill Foundation
Scholar, Eagleton Scholar, and a Coe Family Foundation Scholar. He is
listed in Who's Who in American Politics and Who's Who in American
Education.
Dr.
Sanstead has been recognized with numerous awards, among them the 1991
Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Olaf College. He was selected as
Communicator of the Year for 1992 by the National Forensic League. In 1993
he received
the International Reading Association Literacy Award. In 1994 Dr. Sanstead
was selected Advocate of the Year by the American School Counselor Association.
In 1995, Dr. Sanstead was selected as the recipient of the National Federation
Outstanding Speech Educator Award.
Dr. Sanstead and his wife, Mary Jane,
have two sons, Jon, a practicing attorney at Pearce & Durick law firm in Bismarck and Tim,
engaged in private business in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
