	North Dakota PBS Initiative
	The purpose of the Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Initiative, administered by Coordinated School Health, is to improve academic performance. It is not a curriculum that dictates what schools or districts must do; rather it is a way to create a positive climate that fits with the individual culture of each school.  It is just a way of doing things. To do this, each school develops at least three behavior expectations and then proactively teaches the students what those expectations “look like” in various school settings. It is a seamless system in that the expectations apply to all students. It is also seamless in that ALL staff participate in proactively establishing the school culture.  The program training requires eight days over a three-year period.  Free training is provided regionally to minimize LEA time and travel. At present, 32 schools have implemented ND PBS.  The results are dramatic. All schools have had a significant decrease in office discipline referrals, which creates more time for students in the classroom, which leads to improved academic performance. In fact some schools that have made AYP for the first time credit PBS as the primary reason for their success.  PBS aligns with RTI as a support initiative.  The bottom line is – it works! The North Dakota Positive Behavior Support Initiative grew from a recognized relationship between learning and behavior and a growing body of data indicating behavioral issues are on the rise in North Dakota schools. The effort was initiated by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) with recognition from the beginning that true change requires collaboration across DPI divisions and other state and local partners. DPI strongly supports and funds this local initiative, with the following units assuming leadership roles:
