Welcome to the Migrant Literacy NET!
Migrant Literacy NET is a website to provide teachers with tools for quickly assessing and providing supplemental research-based literacy lessons to students in grades K-12 to improve their foundational literacy skills. Educators can use this site to quickly identify individual student literacy needs using Student Success Plans, enter students' missing skills into the website criteria, and access instructional lessons designed to improve specific literacy skills. Graduation Plans are also available on the Migrant Literacy NET to help secondary students and out-of-school youth overcome barriers to graduation
Lessons address reading, writing, and study skills and are designed specifically for highly mobile students who are often English language learners. The reading lessons are based on the five dimensions of reading identified by the U.S. Department of Education (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency (including oral reading skills), vocabulary development, and comprehension). The writing lessons are based on national standards for writing developed by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) which include: 1. Using general skills and strategies of the writing process; 2. Using the stylistic and rhetorical aspect of writing; 3 Using grammatical and mechanical conventions in written compositions; and 4. Gathering and using information for research purposes. The study skills lessons are based key proficiencies to facilitate success in school from current research and best practice.
Each lesson contains a pre/post assessment to determine student learning needs both prior to delivering instruction and after receiving instruction to determine if a student has mastered the content.
